Wiltshire Police Officer Cleared From Charges

Almost 2 years ago a quite contraversial case became a major interest for the public. Sgt Andrews, a police officer at Wiltshire Police Station was captured on CCTV system dragging a woman and pushing her into an arrest cell as a result of which the woman’s face and eye were hurt to the extent of her suffering average bodily harm. And even though the police officer was convicted and sentenced, doubts remained as to the justice in this case. Now however, the court has quashed Andrew’s conviction as the evidence provided on the appeal case shuttered the initial decision and seem to have satisfied the expectations from the case.
The presiding judge in the Oxford Crown Court held that the injuries of Ms Somerville (the detained person by Sgt Andrews) were as a result of her holding the frame of the cell door and resisting a lawful arrest and that the police officer had not any intention of hurting her or causing her harm. According to the court, he has been acting under his duty and considering the facts around the detention of Ms Somerville, it was likely that he acted within the standards imposed by the police authority.
So just like the fuel services, this court decision put ’oil into the fire’. Still in the UK people are uncertain as to the extent of the power that police can exercise. On the other hand, police officers dealing daily with criminals seem to be harshly judged by the public authorities whereas society would enjoy more serious protection and stronger security. Should the conduct of every officer be criminalised in the smallest of struggles between him and the suspect, this might impose serious risks to the preservation of security and undermine the authority of the police forces.
