New drought-tolerant corn (maize) has been developed by DuPont

January 20th, 2011

Maize is a grain which is well-known for its various uses. It is used as a staple food in many countries as well as in other cooked dishes as a result of which it is considered valuable as a food source. Therefore, it is essential to protect this food source and DuPont has recognised that need. DuPont is a company that specialises in creating safer, healthier and better lives by the application of science and technology. Since, its inception in 1802, DuPont has made tremendous contributions in the field of Agriculture, Building and Construction, Electronics, Energy, Government, Manufacturing and the Plastics industry.

Recently, DuPont has come up with an innovative way to create drought-resistant maize, but using traditional ways. This has been a major breakthrough for the company, as they have created a seed of this sort for the very first time. The research was carried out in various parts of America and had been found to give a 5% greater yield than the other GM seeds. DuPont’s agri-business arm called Pioneer released this version of seeds which will soon be marketed in the drier western states such as Texas, Colorado and Kansas. These seeds will be marketed under the brand name of “Optimum Aqua Max”.

This hybrid seed provides greater yields and therefore are more efficient. It has also triggered rivalry between DuPont and the other well established seed producers such as Monsanto and Switzerland based Syngenta.

Now all we can do is, wait and see the produce and the cost of production with all the inputs including gas oil, and the impact on maize yields, this ordinary looking seed has. Possibly one of the challenges that may arise is higher yields which may cause a glut on the market thus killing prices which may force some farmers out of business worldwide.
